Why English education is so popular

  • Thorough approach and attention to the whole process of education.
  • Centuries of teaching traditions and methods.
  • Better chances to study at a university of your dream either in the UK or abroad.
  • Language and culture skills.

Main stages of education

Education in the UK is different from educational systems of Russia and CIS countries. Compulsory education starts when children are 5 years old and continues till they are 16. Pre-school, or early years, education prepares children for full school curriculum during at least 2 years before they turn 5. Its goal is to have children used to school routine, provide learning, development and care for them.

At 5 years of age children start primary school where they study till they are 11. The national curriculum in England includes 11 subjects, 3 core (English, Maths and Science) and 8 foundation. Pupils are assessed through SATs in the middle and at the end of primary school.

Secondary school is for all children between the ages of 11 and 16. First three years they study 12 subjects and then cut down to 6. They start focusing on specific subjects to further take GCSE exams in order to get a General Certificate of Secondary Education. This certificate, however, does not give the right to get higher education. Those wishing to go to a university must continue studies for another 2 years at the end of which they take A-level exams which give them access to higher education. These can be taken at a school, college or even university.

Many parents from abroad often choose boarding schools that provide both classes and accommodation. Children come home only for holidays. Academic year in England is divided in three terms, autumn, spring and summer. Every term has a half-term break for 4-10 days depending on the council. Christmas and Easter breaks are 11-17 days, and a summer break is around 1.5 months.

Best age to send a child to school in England

All children are different in their physical and psychological development, so the best age is normally between 11 and 13. Children of this age are already quite independent and learn to be responsible. They learn quickly, especially the language, and quickly adapt to new environment. Besides, a child will have enough time to prepare for application to a university.

How much it will cost you

Foreigners are allowed to study only at public schools in England which differ in curriculum and price. Average cost of primary education will be around £7,000-£10,000 per one semester, of secondary education – from £9,000. Additional costs are visa, health insurance, flights and accommodation.
